Happiness in Boots

It's getting cold here in New Hampshire. We've moved beyond the transitional fall weather, and are precarioulsy close to the snows of winter. Any day now, and the snow will arrive. Although I'm really not fond of cold weather, there is one thing about the cooler temperatures that makes me happy: I get to wear my boots.

In fact, boots are an integral part of my fall/winter wardrobe. I have three pair: a knee-high, low heeled boot to wear with my knee-length skirts; an ankle boot with a 2" heel to wear with my trousers; and a fancy tall pair with a 3" heel for dressy occasions. As far as my shoe wardrobe goes, these three pair will last me through the winter and into early spring.

Deciding on boots as a mainstay was an easy decision for me...I want to be able to wear socks when it's cold! And I have the most comfortable, warm, snuggly cashmere socks that are a dream with boots. Because the boots keep me warm, the tall boots, knee-length skirt and blazer combo is one of my signature looks this time of year.

Deciding on just three pair for the season was a carefully made decision. Just like my clothing wardrobe is pared down, so is my shoe wardrobe. Three pair seems to cover all the bases stylishly, while also allowing me to alternate shoes from day-to-day. (Doing this is important not only for your shoes, but for your feet, as well.)

The one boot style I've not embraced is the bootie worn with skirts. Even going monochrome, the look still shortens me considerably...and when you are just shy of 5', every inch of height (whether illusion or not) counts! But I also find the look to be too trendy for my style...I think it reminds me too much of the 80's fashion I was hoping to forget.

How about you? Do you find cold-weather happiness in boots?

See you next time...same blog time...same blog channel....

So, 3 pairs of boots...that's a small number indeed. Do you have a small number of shoes in your very small closet as well, or do you allow yourself a more expansive shoe collection?

As for my own boots, I've never been a boot wearer. I had a pair of pseudo cowboy boots when I was in high school, and, as a teenager, I had a pair of steel toe boots to do yard work in:-)

Hi , Jenn
Humm, unfortuantely the only happiness I find in my boots is when they get put away for the summer. I really hate the cold..must do something about that

Jennifer,

Only 3 pair of boots??!!?? At least yours are functional and stylish.

I wear boots almost weekly all year round. But I also go out dancing a lot...

I admire your logical approach to boots.

I know that some (many) women are obsessed with buying shoes; it seems to be a form of self-stroking that gets passed down through the generations.

I like shoes that I can live with a long time (and buy very infrequently); so I go for good quality classics.

I have a pair of deck shoes that are sixteen years old, survived white water rafting in Australia and two days soaked through in my luggage on the way back home. A quick blast through the washing machine and they were fine (they smelled better too).

I would love to wear boots in the winter, but I can't find boots that are wide enough to accomodate my calves. I have a pair of boots that are between my ankle and calf in height but, like your experience with booties, I find they visually shorten my legs when worn with skirts. Do you have any resources for finding boots that would fit my calves?

I LOVE boots! I just saw a pair at the mall that my daughter and I both wanted. They were off-white suede with furry lining the laced up the front. But they were $80 and I just can't spend that on myself (and I can't buy my daughter white anything, because they wouldn't be white very long!)Maybe Santa will bring them!

I completely agree with Matt.Winter is my survival period, even X-mas can hardly make it better. If I lived in a warm country I'd feel like living double life.

I had a woman friend who fished in tournaments...and she would take her winnings and buy boots! She'd go from Fishergirl to New York City in a flash!

I can see the need of three pairs of different lengths. Are they all the same color? Black or brown?

Darryl- I do have more than 3 pair of shoes. :-) Like the rest of my wardrobe, I rotate my shoes seasonally. And then I have other necessary footwear like a pair of trainers, a dressy black shoe, and snow boots.

Angie-
Welcome! I do have some resources...I'll answer your question in the next Q&A.

Lisa-
I hear you! At one point in my youth my mother gifted me with a white-white winter coat. It ended up being some color that I can't exactly describe...but you can safely say it wasn't white any longer!

Hi Aquarijenn-
This year my boots are all brown. Two are regular leather, and one is suede.

I love boots, too. Never wore them before I moved to the east coast, can't imagine fall/winter without them!

I have a pair of Anne Klein black leather knee high boots w/ 3" heels, another pair of AK black suede ankle boots w/ slightly lower heels for pants (brand new on eBay, $25, woot!) and a pair of rugged Sorel boots that I've had for maybe 15 years (replacing the removable boot liner every so often). The Sorel ones see the most use, as they're the only pair of boots I can put my LL Bean ice-grip doohickeys on to make it from my house to my car in the snow/ice.

What I'm looking for now are the same styles, but in brown, as I wear that color as my base neutral more often now. Now that I've identified the outfits I want to wear the boots with, I know exactly what kind of boots I want, so I'm just biding my time until I find just the right pair (most likely on eBay again).

Timely! I've been torturing myself over boots for months. I'm really interested in flat, motorcycle styles, but don't want to feel clunky or schlumpy. I think I've been trying to hard to find one perfect pair of boots for all occasions. instead of looking for a couple of different styles to cover my bases. Good food for thought!

ChristineB - Sounds like you have serious winter weather, too! Ebay is a great place to find boots. (And other items, too!) Don't you just love it when you "win" the auction? :-)

Sara- Nice to see you here, and welcome!

I hope you also have a good pair of snow boots!

I have black snow boots but they don't look too terrible with jeans over them. Not stylish, but not awful.

I don't have any others. I guess I'm not really a boot gal.

I have ONE pair for winter snow walking when I used to visit the NE when my grandmother was still alive.

I do have one sexy heel pair... I think I will have to break those out again. Mmm, perhaps for my romantic singles date Thursday.

All the best,

Hi Kacie-
Welcome! I do have a pair of snowboots...a very functional pair for the really inclement weather. Otherwise my regular boots (with nice warm socks) serve me well.
